Building Automation Field Leader

Location: Greensboro, NC

Position Overview

We are seeking a senior technical Building Automation Field Leader to guide our growing controls team and serve as a hands-on subject matter expert across service and installation projects. In this high-impact technical leadership role, you will lead a team of 3 to 5 field technicians, driving technical excellence while remaining active in the field to troubleshoot complex control systems, execute field calls, and support high-priority projects.

You will bridge our service and installation departments—assisting with project pre-planning, pre-programming technical systems, and mentoring junior technicians to build top-tier field capabilities. We need a self-directed leader who can hit the ground running immediately following a one-week orientation: conducting preventative maintenance, verifying sequence of operations, calibrating sensors, and resolving advanced networking and mechanical control issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, support, and mentor a field team of 3 to 5 technicians, raising the team’s overall technical capability through direct coaching and field assistance.
  • Remain active in the field running service calls, performing control system preventative maintenance, calibrating sensors, and verifying equipment response.
  • Rotate between service and installation teams to assist with pre-planning, system configuration, and technical project execution for non-contractual won bids.
  • Perform comprehensive controls maintenance across commercial facilities and complex equipment—including IntelliPak units (focusing on control logic and electrical components rather than refrigeration circuits), VAV systems, and series/parallel boxes.
  • Troubleshoot communication buses, configure routers, set up switches, establish communication with JACEs or internal controllers, and isolate network faults (e.g., splitting buses to identify communication drops).
  • Access and navigate Niagara networks to troubleshoot wire sheets, review configurations, and adjust settings. Work directly with Carrier controls (both CCN and Open platforms) and iView interfaces.

Requirements

  • Senior-level experience in commercial building automation systems (BAS), electronic controls, and HVAC field troubleshooting.
  • Strong mechanical background with deep working knowledge of how controls integrate with HVAC systems, VAV boxes, electrical components, and commercial units.
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems’ installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Advanced knowledge of all DDC control systems.
  • Intermediate, applied knowledge of gas heating, direct expansion cooling, heat pumps, boilers, chillers (Air Cooled and Water Cooled), pumps, water flow, and air flow.
  • Advance industry product knowledge; technical terminology.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to display leadership behavior and professionalism in the workplace and on job sites; professional appearance, behavior, and communications (verbal and written).
  • Possess valid NC driver’s license; acceptable driving record.
  • Attention to detail; perceptual speed; information ordering.
  • Time management; organizational skills.
  • Adaptability; dependability; flexibility; integrity.
  • Team player; strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.

Control Systems Proficiency:

  • Direct experience with Carrier controls (CCN and Open) and iView software.
  • Hands-on familiarity with Niagara framework; ability to navigate wire sheets, verify configurations, and troubleshoot settings (Niagara certification is a major plus, though full graphics/programming creation is not the primary focus).
  • Specific experience maintaining control systems on IntelliPak units and hydronic/air distribution components.
  • Proven ability to configure IP routers, switches, JACE networks, and troubleshoot RS-485/MSTP communication bus issues independently.
  • Active EPA certification and OSHA 10 required (company will sponsor/certify if needed). Valid driver’s license with a clean, insurable driving record.
